This is a working progress and is not a finished product but it shows the 3 different levels of the department store. I have included the lift and escalator as described in the book and I am now working on creating models for all the displays and counters for the store. My final piece will work like a dolls house with the front section of some kind of hinge so it can be opened to see inside.

This is a photo of the basement section of my set model. This is the nome section under the floorboards. I have painted all the sections to look like wood and the doorways to look like mouse holes. I have also painted the exterior walls to look like brick. This photo also shows the steps which I have made to hide the basement section. The department store section will fit on top of this part. The different areas of the basement represent the different departments of the store and the different tribes of nomes that live in them.

These are the interior pages of my 2 fold brochure. I have just used placeholder text and images for the time being. I want to include a bit of information about the world of ‘nomes’ along with a brief description of the main characters. The centre page will show a small photo of the actors along with a description and the last page is dedicated to Terry Pratchett. I think my layout works quite well but I possibly have too much text. I want to try and work on the layout to utilise the space without filling it completely with text.

BROCHURE/PROGRAM

This is a design for a 2 fold brochure/program. This image shows the front and back designs along with one of the interior pages. I have kept the front and back quite simple with no overwhelming information. On the interior page I have listed all the show times and dates (obviously these are not real).

Part of my concept for the promotion of my play consists of having a series of very small and very large objects. I want to have 2 sets of these brochures printed: one would be small e.g. A6 size or less; and one would be really big e.g. size A3 or above. The people who get these would be decided on which ticket they receive. I will have 2 sets of tickets (one small one big) and it would be up to the person to decide which one they want. If they choose the small one then they will also get the small brochure, and the big ticket holders get the big brochure.

FLYER

This is my flyer design. It uses a similar layout to my poster but I have put all of the information on the back along with the blurb from the book. I think this is necessary to entice people and to give them a feel for what the play is about. I have used a gradient in my designs which I know some people don’t like, however I wanted to create a spooky and creepy effect and I think this colour combination represents that quite well.

Poster Idea

Here is a quick poster I have done for my play. I did want to create a painting or sketch for my imagery because I wanted it to look spooky, however after a few tries I realised it wasn’t working and I didn’t feel confident working in that style. So I went to what I know and created this in illustrator. I think it still gives a good feel for the book and it looks quite spooky. I have used the tag line “Experience the magical world of the Nomes as they join forces to escape Arnold Bros (Est. 1905)”. This is a pretty vague statement which I think sums up the plot of the story. Also using the word ‘experience’ suggests it will be more than just sitting down watching a play. The audience will follow the actors around the set and experience everything, similar to performance art where the audience participates.

I have started thinking about how I am going to brand my campaign that will coincide with my set design. Here are a few logo ideas for ‘truckers’. I also need a second logo for ‘Arnold Bros est.1905’ which is the name of the department store in the book. I have an idea for a poster where I would create a painting of the set as it would be in situe. I want it to be quite a spooky image so I think a painting or sketch would be the best way to achieve this.

SET DESIGN

Here is the first stage of my set design. So far I’ve made the exterior walls and the walls for the basement section which will be hidden underneath the store. I want to add steps to the outside so that the basement will be disguised and can only be seen by lifting up the main section. I have had several ideas about how to build my maquette in a way that would show all the different levels. I think the best way for me to do this would be to build it like a dolls house where the front will open to reveal inside. However, this could be a problem for the top level because this will be sectioned off into different rooms. So I could have a roof that also opens up to reveal the top level.

I went in to the session this morning to show some of my ideas for my set. Lee said he wants me to have at least 1 level of my maquette built for next week but I really don’t think I’m ready for that just yet. I have been thinking about how I want my set to function e.g. how it can be taken apart to see all of the sections and I have started sketching out the layouts inside. I feel like I will be able to start my set by next week and have the main structure of it built. And maybe have some more detailed sketches of the interior. But I don’t want to rush building it because I don’t want to ruin it and make it end up looking scruffy. But I think if I get the main part built I can start making some of the objects to go inside so hopefully people will be able to get an idea of what it will look like. It was also said that I need to start the branding. There are two elements of branding that I need to do, one is for the department store as described in the book, and the other is my promotional material for the play. I’ve had an idea for a poster based of some images I have been looking at this week. I thought maybe I could paint the department store and make it kind of creepy looking, similar to the league of gentlemen. I think this would give a good image of what I want the atmosphere to be like. I also want to work on the designs for the tickets and program, however I don’t think I will be concentrating on the content of the program. I will probably just create the cover for it.

I find this really interesting because I have never really thought of set design in that context before.
